Alteration 1

The original painting is the view of an art gallery, which is full of paintings. We know that we are looking at the painting because of the frame of the paintings. The frame is the element that define what is real and what is fake. In this alteration I introduce more frame to cover the background. This would add the ambiguity into the capriccio. This make it more difficult to define what is real and what is fake. It also raises questions about how the actual space really is.

Original painting & Capriccio analysis diagram

The original capriccio is the view of an art gallery. It is full of paintings and statues. The painting are mainly the architectural paintings showing different impressive spaces. In the diagram, I created my own story about the space from different elements that can be seen in the painting. It is showing my own interpretation of the painting.

Alteration 1

The original painting is the view of a ruin which looked sacred and untouchable. In this alteration I imagined what would happen when we cut a section through a buildings that we see. There actually might be many people living behind this ruin facade, and circulating around by elevators. Which is completely different from what we perceived from outside.

Original painting & Capriccio analysis diagram

The original painting is the view of an architectural ruin of unknown civilization. The buildings inside the painting are mainly sacred building like temple, castle, court etc. The place where the building is situated in gives the untouchable quality to the painting. The diagram shows the detail of my interpretation of the painting.

Other alterations

Ancient Rome alteration 2

In this one, I changed all the paintings into tunnel, that we can actually enter and lead us to different spaces.

Ancient Rome alteration 3

In this one I changed the scale of the people, by making them smaller. This would change the whole spatial quality of the view. The paintings would become the real buildings.

 Ancient Rome alteration 4

This one I introduces the White Rabbit from Alice inWonderland. This alienated character would changed the overall spatial quality of the space. This added the endless of potential to the corridor on the right hand side which is blocked by the paintings. There might be the real wonderland in that corridor!!

Ancient Rome alteration 5

In this one I bring the mist which is in the background of the painting to the gallery space. This added the mysterious quality to the space.

Architectural Fantasy alteration 2

In this one I changed the scenery into the night scenery and changed the buildings into golden glowing buildings. This make the fantasy quality of the painting stronger.

Architectural Fantasy alteration 3

In this one I added people into the scenario. This would weaken the untouchable quality of the painting.

Architectural Fantasy alteration 4

In this one I changed the time in the view into a day time. By doing this the mysterious and dreamlike quality of the painting are removed.

Architectural Fantasy alteration 5

In this one I changed the location of the scene, from a foggy lake to the cliff. This make the scenery more untouchable.
